Over the past decades, Brazil has advanced a lot in relation to entry and student learning in the early years of elementary school, but important challenges remain. For example, according to the school census data , 18% of students from 1st to 5th grade tht are taking the courses within their age recommendation – ie, are lagging behind the colleagues of the same age – which means they have not learned what they should in certain age and are at risk of dropping out of school situation.

To assist school systems in Brazil to meet key goals of the National Education Plan  for the early years of elementary school and overcome the problem of age-grade, the Ayrton Senna Institute supports the education departments in achieving four main objectives :

  • Universalize, by 2016, the Early Childhood Education in preschool for children 4-5 years old
  • Ensure that at least 95% of students complete the initial years of elementary school at the recommended age, by 2024.
  • Alphabetize all children, no later than the end of the 3rd year of primary education.
  • Reduce Age-Grade Distortion to 5%, promoting the quality of basic education, improving the school flow and learning

For achieving these objectives, we help the education departments in defining strategies, staff training and monitoring results. The management goals and actions are carried out by a steering committee composed of professionals from different teams and the secretariat team Instituto Ayrton Senna. In addition to providing support and ongoing monitoring to the management committee, created conditions for the partner departments to exchange experiences and learn networking.

With regard specifically to the fourth goal, we offer two educational solutions that operationalize methodologies for reducing age-grade. Our educational solutions flow correction include both students already literate, but lagging behind the same age peers (Solution Accelerates Brazil), as students illiterate in the same situation (Solution If League). Both solutions require the allocation of students in specific classes and work with cognitive and socio-emotional to prevent future withholdings and ensure school success.
